Thicker Than Blood
Millennium ****
Peter Gunn (real name Peter Jurgens) is also known to some for his ambient house albums, recorded under the guise of Ten Madison. The second long-player recorded under his Peter Gun pseudonym, ŒThicker Than Water¹ is once again a triumphant collection of minimal tech-house grooves, the likes of which have found favour with the likes of Sasha, Digweed, Timo Maas, Pete Tong and Seb Fontaine. Each composition is as dark as the next and while not particularly hook-heavy, the hypnotic qualities of the bass-heavy electro house proves alluring throughout.

The prolific Peter Gun returns to the fold with his follow up to last year¹s warmly received ŒPressure Point¹ album. For those not familiar with the producer, Peter Gun is a pseudonym of Peter Jurgens, who also goes under the names D&K, Plastik Funk and The Untouchables. He is best known for his collaboration with Oliver Moldan as Prawler.
Thicker Than Blood is a trip into the tribal end of progressive house. Œ3 a.m.¹ is as much a suggested time of playing as a track title it¹s dark, pumping rhythms, structured alongside a heavy bassline and catchy vocal sample will work wonders on a big sound system. The thought-provokingly entitled ŒYou¹re name on my ass¹ is even heavier than Œ3 a.m.¹ borrowing a few tricks from a not-too-far-removed cousin.
Other highlights include the up-tempo ŒFast Food¹ with its growling industrial effects and ŒMutant¹ which extends the industrial theme but adds in some interesting mid-track elements.
A decent album but one that does not progress or showcase anything beyond a tribal sound. Fans of dark, minimal progressive will enjoy this album (which is unmixed for you DJs) but those who enjoy something with more melody and warmth should give it a miss.
